DescriptionIn order to pay homage and tribute to the amazing talent that was Carlos Pacheco, here is a page from what I consider to be one of his top projects alongside Avengers Forever (in the sense that both writing and art perfectly clicked on those). Here we have a very cool fight scene between a possessed Batman and Dr Midnight. The fluidity and balance of the choreography is fantastic. The body language of both characters is top notch and particularly enhanced by the flow of their respective cape that indicate the perpetual movement within the scene. From Batman ragingly going for the kill to Midnight overall defensive position, trying not to hurt his friend (as if!). The first two panels are great at setting the fight on the rooftops. The Batman throwing batarangs in panel one is fantastic but his position in panel 2 is pure HK kung-fu cinema. I don’t know why but I have always loved characters leaning on chimneys, just barely, to rebound while jumping or for fighting purpose 😊 That third panel movement decomposition (à la Frank Miller, Scott Mcdaniel, Rick Leonardi or Steve Skroce) is amazing and quite bold as it indicates that Midnight is basically quicker than the Bat who appears to be frozen in mid-kick because of it. Then the fight stops as Batman lands a punch on his opponent and smashes him on the wall (with great impact fissures and tiny debris). Note the typical Pacheco mouth on Midnight in panel 5. The last panel is fantastic with the close up on a worried Midnight and the reflection of the Bat in his google lenses. Let’s not forget to mention the perfect match that Merino’s inks provided on Carlos’ pencils but this has become a truism at this stage (however so true it is). I was told firsthand and read from several artists upon his passing that many younger artists (then, now established talents in the industry) trying to/getting their first jobs at Marvel and DC BOTH were shown pages from Carlos’ work as the gold standard to achieve in terms of storytelling. And their reaction was the same: we are f***ed as there is no way we can match those mad skills. His artistry was grandiose and his storytelling superb, always fluid and full of subtlety. I will miss seeing his new art on a regular basis and will cherish what he left behind. Social/Sharing |

Now THIS is the Carlos Pacheco I know and love! An excellent storyteller, he makes this sequence look like it's a series of movie stills taken from a director's camera. It also comes from what I find to be the peak of the Pacheco/Merino collaboration. Beautiful stuff!

Pacheo and Merino at the top of their game! Even though they've been around for so long, it still look moden and cutting edge of ation storytelling and choreography. Cinmatic as all heck and a celebration of their legacy.

So good. This is the book that introduced me to Pacheco's work. He was such a versatile artist with a really elegant line.

CRACK! That's the sound of the storytelling cracking me right on the jaw. Your eye for cinematic pages might be the best on the site. I will be honest, I didn't appreciate his art like I should've. This is a gorgeous page, with fantastic cinematic storytelling. The emotion of those last two panels, with the zipatone Batman reflection on his goggles...superb. RIP

I was so excited when I first heard about this book, and it didn't disappoint. Pacheco was one of the best.

Carlos was a superb artist and this page shows why. The fight choreography is beautiful and the figures are dynamic. What a great page!

What beautiful storytelling, from an incredible artist taken from us far too soon (although we honestly could've gotten another 30 years of work from Carlos and I would have still thought the same thing). Fantastic second and sixth panels, executed exactly as they should be, and placed exactly where they should be. Superb piece, as smooth and fluid in character anatomy as Steve Rude and as dramatic in its action storytelling and pacing as Immonen. Just... a moment of silence. R.I.P. Carlos. Beautiful, beautiful add and tribute, Fred.
