DescriptionA very cool BP commission that I commissioned from Steve in 2005 (through ebay if memory serves where he used to auction commission options when it wasn't as common for him to accept them).Given his strong Toth & Kirby influences, BP which his a fav' character of mine, was an obvious choice. At that point, I already owned a BP from Steve to which he mistakenly added the cape (as I prefer BP without it, ninja feline stealth like). So I corrected that "wrong" with this commission, insisting for the cowl to be absent as well as the jungle settings. (I'll someday show the first one as it also a great piece in its own right). I absolutely LOVE the crouched on the prowl pose. It's pitch perfect for BP following the trail of who knows who. I sometime find that Steve marker sketchs are too rough or too quick but while not perfect, this one works well here with the high contrast approach Steve choose to use. The negative space defined jungle around him does a great job at framing the illustration. Quite happy with it. I believe it was published in one of Steve many sketchbooks. Social/Sharing |

Fantastic! Feels like a cross between Kirby and Toth. Beautiful.

Great pose and background, but that's not surprising from The Dude. But are you confusing "cape" with "cowl"? Because you say you don't like him wearing the cowl and are happy it was left out, but he IS wearing it and I don't believe any collector would prefer the character to be drawn without the cowl...

Totally agree with your point on the roughness of some of Steve'smarker sketches but this one turned out beautifully. Terrific dynamic pose.

An elegant pose that shows the power and sleekness of a big cat in its habitat. A flawless silent ferocity behind that shadowy and mysterious all black mask.

The use of negative space for the background certainly does elevate this to the level of something special. Wonderful piece!

I love the opposing negative and positive foliage use. It balances the tones of the commission so well. And that Kirby pose is perfect. This is reminiscent of a famous Kirby commission of black panther but I saw not too long ago, imo. Very nice work. Congrats!

Rude dude's BP! Sweet! Liking the pose a lot, and it screams classic/vintage BP - love that. Congrats, F!

Yeah, the black foliage foreground and white foliage background really set a lovely stage to frame this great rendition of T'Challa within, and I absolutely agree with everyone else that the Panther himself looks like he was ripped right from the pages of Kirby's and Toth's brains. Actually scratch that; I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that in this particular instance our hero actually looks more like a Timm Black Panther to me. :) Beautiful commission, F M! Thanks for sharing, and please post your other Rude Panther, too!

Very nice, but the original Kirby-mini-cape is missing :)
