This one is AWESOME. I need some profanity to explain how awesome it is. At the 2006 Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, MD, I happened upon Howie, one of the guys who runs the comic shop I go to, Phoenix Comics in Landsdowne, VA (as of 4/25/07), talking to one of the creators. That turned out to be Scott Morse. Scott was doing a painting for Howie on the inside of a book Howie had bought or brought (I don't know which, but Howie is a fan of Scott's). I watched the process while waiting to get some scrawls on my issues of Elektra: Glimpse and Echo. When he finished with Howie and I asked him for the autographs, I also asked if he'd be interested in doing something in one of my sketchbooks, "Least Expected" or "Anything Marvel". The latter was virgin, uncracked, and he said he'd start that one out and asked if it was okay if he used the double-page spread including the inside cover. Okay Scott, twist my arm!! So he gets going on this painting and I see he's building it into the Fantastic Four. And he kept building. And building. And building. Sometimes, he had something specific in mind as his brush went from color to color (all shades of black, white, and gray). Other times, he'd just put paint down and see where it led (see The Thing's cigar and smoke!). Howie kept coming by and going, "That is sick" and Scott kept going until finally, he said, "Wow, this is actually something I'd charge like $100 for!" I told him I was happy to give him something for this amazing piece, although I was looking for a quickie/freebie! I'm glad I stopped by! This scan does not do this painting justice!
