DescriptionEver since I was a kid, I always wanted some Reed Crandall original art, including art from King Comics' Flash Gordon #6.Flash Gordon #6 is a key issue from a number of standpoints. First, it is Reed Crandall's first time illustrating that famous character in comic story form. Second, it's probably Crandall's last TRULY GREAT story art, considering the various health issues that would later afflict Crandall and negatively affect the quality of his work. Third, I believe that this was the last issue of Flash Gordon to feature "Large Art" original art pages, and that the later work by Crandall on Flash Gordon (published by King Comics and then Charlton comics) was drawn on the smaller "Modern Size" boards. While there are better pages in this particular issue of Flash Gordon, this is a nice representative piece that features a bit of action, some nice figure shots, and a close-up of Flash. It also has one panel with the other major characters, Dale and Zarkov. I only wish there were more images of Dale, considering that Crandall was one of the premiere comic artists at rendering females. Note also how good Dale looks with a normal figure, and not the 50DDD breasts that some modern comic book artists, lacking basic drawing skills, foolishly consider normal and/or sexy. I remember seeing some of Crandall's Flash Gordon pages pop up on a couple of dealer sites and was kicking myself that I didn't have the funds to go after one. This is a very sweet page for all the reasons you mentioned in your excellent commentary, plus I love the feeling of timelessness I get when I look at it.

I agree that this is one of Crandall's best efforts with the work he did during the King Comics' Flash Gordon comic book series. I have all thirty odd copies of those comics and several pages of artwork from some of them. At one time I owned a Crandall page from a later issue (smaller size and not such quality as seen in issue #6), but traded it for another piece. Although it wasn't as nice as yours, I wish I had it back just to have a sample of Crandall's "Flash" in my collection. You are indeed fortunate.

Sweet Crandall art, even if the inking is sparser than in his EC days. The anatomy perfect as always. Crandall also did some fine work for Warren and Gilberton, before he faded away.
