Description

My Buddy Karl had this signed by Jack at one of our visits to Roz & Jack's house in the late 80's and early 90's. He got the splash and I got the cover. A few ears later I got the splash from my ol' chum in a trade and it's resided on my wall ever since.

Update 4-9-11: Stan Lee signed this for me today. Is it LESS valuable now? :)

Update 11-12-18: Stan passed away today.

I met Stan a few times over the years but on the occasion that this was signed ( see here: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=749803 ) I had agonized over whether or not to have him sign it. After all it was KIRBY ART and even Stan acknowledged that this was Jack's sole creation: “I told Jack that we needed a character that was like a God and he came back with Galactus and this naked guy on a surfboard", I heard him say in person at a convention in Los Angeles in 1988. (It makes one wonder how many other characters Stan "created" in this way)

Like many of us art collectors and other people in the know, I agree that Stan had taken more credit than he deserved for the creation of the Marvel characters. HOWEVER the fact remains that without Stan running the show, the Marvel age of comics, as we know it, simply would never have happened. That’s why, even though I labored long and hard about whether to have Stan sign this piece, I ultimately decided that he should. After all, this is one Kirby/Lee collaboration where we know Stan did SOME of the writing. :)

Thank you Stan for creating the Marvel Universe. Thank you Jack for creating the inhabitants of that universe. Rest in Peace

I knew a Karl once. Does that help? (Perhaps there is an mathematical equation you can use like the poetry scale in the movie Dead Poets Society – the coolness of the art vs. the importance of the artist – which tells you when and where you can ignore the personalization factor.)

Not only is it personalized but that stupid naked guy blocks what may very well have been the greatest rendering of a hand in all of artdom. Tragic waste.

Probably the single best Surfer image of all time. So cool that you have it, and better yet, got to experience it in the Kirby residence.
