Description

Bill Everett is probably best known for creating the Sub-Mariner and lesser known for co-creating Daredevil (although there are conflicting reports of Kirby’s influence there). The Sub-Mariner was the primary character in the now famous Marvel Comics #1 published in 1939 by Martin Goodman’s Timely Comics (which eventually became Marvel comics). Namor continued through World War II, disappeared for a while, came back in the 50’s and eventually became an important character in the Marvel universe today. Sadly, Bill actually had a terribly short career, passing away in the early 70’s after a brief illness at age 55.

His Marvel super hero work is limited, but generally coveted by OA collectors. In some cases, he wrote, in others he penciled. Some he inked, and in some stories, he did some combination of the above.

Strong penciling style plus strong inking style don’t always equal a wonderful combination. For example, Everett inked Jack Kirby on some pre-hero monster tales, and then briefly on a run of Thor. In Thor, he inked the interiors in issue 143, and then on issues 170 through 176. The results are, well, uneven. There are some pages when Everett’s style takes over, and others where you can’t tell who did what, but then there are other pages… Pages that are just pure Kirby, enhanced by a strong line by Everett. Those pages? Those just amaze me. Really great comic art is a page where the pencils are made better by the inks, the story is advanced by the images, and the words enhance the pictures so all of the parts combine into one greater whole.

Take, for example, the page I’m posting today. I love this page. Why? Because it’s a typical Kirby page when he was at the top of his game, and by that I mean it’s a page that you would never see today. A page that breaks all sorts of rules. One of my friends (who’s a fantastic writer himself) described it as kind of like a bumble bee. All of the rules of physics say it shouldn’t fly – and yet it does.

Will Eisner was known for how he drew the rain. Kirby? Bricks. No one drew bricks like Kirby. In this page, the Wrecker is smashing through a wall in front of Thor. Note a few things about the image. First, the detail. It’s crazy. In some of the Colletta inked Thor issues, backgrounds were erased. Here, Everett obviously took his time with each and every line. Look at the care taken with the detail on the bricks, and revel in the inking. It’s almost 3D in only the way Kirby could draw three dimensions. Second, who’s the focus on? Thor? No. It’s on the Wrecker and his wrecking bar. He’s the central image, setting the tone with the level of damage he’s created. Now look at Thor. His hand is obscuring his face. Would that possibly happen today? Never. Here, Kirby is showing that while Thor can shrug off bullets, he is taken aback by the level of carnage caused by the Asgardian powered Wrecker.

Finally, read the dialogue. It’s wonderful. In one page, you know everything about the Wrecker’s motivations, and his view of the world. At the same time, Stan makes it clear why Thor is Thor. It’s good versus evil. No grey. This page is black and white; literally and figuratively.

Given the detail in that page, Everett is really the man for the job and it shows! Another great pick up Ron!

Great page. I think Everett is the best inker of the Silver age and his work over Kirby and Colan among others is the best of the best.

Utterly fantastic. A dynamic page with comic art devices used to perfection by the originator of said devices - Jack Kirby with a great inking job by the enigmatic Everett. And it features one of my favorite villains the Wrecker. Bravo.

Thor is momentarily taken back yet we know he will meet this challenge head on. Colletta did his best work on Thor but its hard to forgive the amount of Kirby art he erased to save time and beat deadlines. So when you have two singularly powerful artists in Kirby and Everett work together this...magnificent chaos you see not an inch of page is wasted.Great write up and great art!You rock Ron!!!

Funny was just talking to another collector ! 24 hours ago who mentioned he bought this issue complete from Roz Kirby - he said he hadn't see the individual pages show up sicne he broke it up. I am conflicted as I am an Everett Fanatic so want this for myself but nice to see in such a killer collection!

Absolutely luscious page. Thor's motivation crystalized in a single panel. And Kirby Everett no less, the best pairing in comics. Nicely $%#@ing done.

When I clicked through the Board link to see this,I expected something really nice knowing you had picked it up. But, damn, that is just a really special piece from so many perspectives (great art, great dialogue, great splash image), including, as you point out, magnificent detail and inking by Everett.

Ron--this is getting old news, but you've added another great piece to your collection. I too love Everett and his inks here are a fabulous complement to Kirby's pencils. Congratulations as always.

I agree with your comment about how sometimes strong inkers embellish the pencilers and enhance their pencils while others overpower the penciler. This one is a great example of Kirby's style completely intact and enhanced by Everett. Must say, great art and great commentary as always. I enjoy reading your caption as much as look at your artwork.

Ron, this is an absolutely extraordinary page. Given it was near the end of Jack's run at Marvel, with his interest waning and frustrations increasing with the 'Marvel Machines' treatment of their star artist, that he should create such wonderful pencils in a powerful impacting composition, totally enhanced by Everett's technically strong inks is just amazing.
