Description

Put simply, Tomm is a Rennaissance man. Not only does his intricately moody designs grace the covers of a wide array of comic properties, he also directs movies (check out the thriller Catacombs sometime; it's pretty sinister), writes screenplays, and has recently collaborated with the pop singer Lights to create a motion comic for MTV that is truly something to behold. Although, I've been a fan of Tomm's artwork for quite some time, his artistry on the limited series Daredevil: Noir really blew my mind. He and Alexander Irvine were in complete synchronicity on that project, and Tomm created some of my all time favorite DD splash pages in that series. It was truly a visual feast! As a result, I really wanted to track Tomm down to see if he'd be willing to create something for me that exemplified his version of Daredevil's mystique. This was no small feat, but with the help of Tuan L. (whom has a fantastic Hellboy commission piece by Tomm in his CAF gallery), I was able to acquire Tomm's contact info. and floated my request by him last summer. Inspite of his many career interests, Tomm agreed to take something on for me and let me know that it would likely be a while until he could get to it in his queue. That really worked out in my favor, as during the course of our email exchanges, Tomm was really generous with his creative insights, and irrespective of which project of his that we were discussing, his passion for his work was always at the forefront. In my humble opinion, that Coker magic is on full display in this commission piece. For me, it encapsulates a great deal of what makes Daredevil so intriguing (both visually and thematically) as a character. Tomm has really played up the urban wraith aspect of DD's persona, and the effect is serenely haunting. I can't thank Tomm enough for taking the time to squeeze me into his hectic schedule and for creating such a dramatic visual for me. [Ink with white gesso and wash.]
