DescriptionHeritage recently held an auction of pen & ink cartoons and illustrations, which all seemed to come from the collection of the legendary Murray A. Harris. There were a ton of incredible pieces, but my focus was on this super-scarce Raymond Crawford Ewer cartoon from the September 9, 1914 issue of Puck magazine. The piece features work by Ewer at his very best, with wonderful ink-slinging galore. There's almost a hint of Arthur Rackham's work in this piece. Given that Ewer traveled to Europe just a few years earlier, he would have undoubtedly been familiar with Rackham. No scan can do justice to work like this, so I've included a couple of large detail shots. I've also included a pic of the printed page. You'll see that they changed the caption to: "He Came to the Woods to Shoot Song Birds". As someone on Facebook pointed out, folks would have eaten birds and rabbits, but song birds seems more criminal. Finally, I'm glad to add another piece from Murray's collection to my collection. Such a fantastic piece, Rob, both eerie and whimsical in the best possible way. What an absolute gem of an illustration! The gnarled trees, the creepy little old men, and that poor hunter getting a taste of his own medicine, it’s got that perfect mix of dark humor and surreal charm. Such a great find. They really don’t make them like this anymore!

This is definitely worth a look with the larger scan to see all of the forrest turn on mankind for their careless abuse of the natural order. Certainly not a new idea if it was made so clear over a hundred and eleven years ago.

Really incredible Rob! Beautifully drawn...I love how the distortion of the hunter's hands mirrors that of the woodland deities. Congratulations on landing this for your wonderful collection!

Another Ewer! Very cool. Sadly, he would die the following year. Imagine what could've been.
