Description

For reasons that I hope are obvious after touring my CAF gallery, I love all the commissions that Mike Machlan has done for my collection. There is something about Mike's clean, classic style that taps into the warm memories of youth that are the foundation of what my art theme is all about.

The pencil and ink portion of the drawing you see above was setup directly with Mike Machlan in March 2007 and completed one month later. I gave Mike a list of possible scenarios to draw and he chose the Liberty Legion, a group who appeared in an enjoyable multi-part crossover that spanned Fantastic Four Annual 11, Marvel Two in One Annual 1 and MTIO 20.

The characters seen in this drawing are:

(Top) Miss America, Red Raven

(2nd From Top) Blue Diamond, Whizzer, the Patriot, the Thing

(3rd From Top) Thin Man, Jack Frost

(Bottom) Master Man, U-Man, Sky Shark

Jump to April 2008 and I asked Ian Sokoliwski to add his brilliant digital finishes to Mike's drawing. As he does every single time, Ian delivered exactly the look I was hoping for. My thanks to both artists for their outstanding work.

The consummate commission -- perfectly drawn, inked, and colored. Simply doesn't get any better than that. An outstanding piece.
