Description

Linley Sambourne (1844 � 1910) was a longtime Punch cartoonist, working for the magazine for 40 years, and rising to the position of �First Cartoonist�. Sambourne was known for his detailed pen work, with the meticulous layering of hatched and cross-hatched lines. His work was admired by the illustrator David Levine, and you can see a kinship in their works.

This cartoon appeared in Punch magazine on March 11, 1882, accompanied with the following caption: "Harmony; or, the Prince of Wales's Royal Minstrels, Who Will, We Hope, Perform Out of St. Jame's Palace Hall". The cartoon prominently features King Edward VII, who at the time was the Prince of Wales. Edward VII, along with his brother, Prince Albert, were exceedingly fond of music and took a prominent part in establishing the Royal College of Music, which was created by Royal Charter in 1882. As Edward VII conducts his orchestra in the cartoon, there are amounts of pounds sterling on his sheet music, no doubt referencing the cost of the Royal College of Music, which opened in 1883. William Gladstone, who was the Prime Minister in 1882, is seated in the lower right, holding up his instrument.

This cartoon was previously owned my good friend Sy Schechter, and his wife Sandy. Sy was the one who introduced me to the great old British cartoonists, and this was one of his favorite pieces in his collection. It's an honor to own it.

I've added some additional images, including detail shots. It's interesting to note that the published piece was actually engraved. Amazingly so.
