DescriptionAs a Catwoman fan, I wanted a nice example of Darwyn Cooke's limited work on the series. Darwyn reinvigorated Catwoman in 2001-2002 through his work on Selina Kyle (Detective Comics 759-762, Catwoman 1-4, Selina's Big Score).During his interview for Comic Book Artist #3, March 2004, Darwyn explains that Ed Brubaker was already on board as the next Catwoman writer, when editor Mike Carlin offered the book to Darwyn. He only agreed, after DC committed to giving him control over the covers and allow him to redesign Catwoman. Darwyn then drew all four covers at once, with the redesigned costume, and sent them in. DC was so excited after seeing his designs, they decided to let the current title (Vol 2) die, and relaunch with a #1 (Vol 3), with several months gap. (Remember - back then, a series relaunch was much more of an event, than it is now). Catwoman Vol 2 ended with issue 94 [Jul 01] Darwyn described the design as an attempt to re-dignify Catwoman, and apply practicality. Ed's wife had the idea that she should have something like a helmet and goggles. The idea was to take Enemy Ace's helmet and add cat ears to it, to distinguish itself from the past cat suits. At then end of Catwoman Vol 2, she is presumed dead. Slam Brady is hired by the mayor of Gotham find out if she really is dead. Slam follows the mystery, which leads into the relaunch of the title. The Slam Brady back-ups appear in Detective Comics [759-762, Aug-Nov 01] published just prior Catwoman 1 [Jan 02], but were drawn well after Catwoman 1-4 [which, according to Darwyn, were finished 18 months before the launch]. Following those Catwoman issues, Darwyn revisits Selina's world again through a series prequel, the 70's noir thriller SELINA'S BIG SCORE [Aug 02]. Social/Sharing |

You've acquired one of the best images of the modern-day Catwoman, a fantastic pose and layout by an artist who was well on his way to stardom. I'd say this is definitely a big score.

Nice "old" page from Cooke. It's rare to see him use as much blacks and shadows nowadays so I'll take this!

One of the four Darwyn covers - nothing else needs to be said. Thanks for the recap of the relaunch - I did not know much of that.

I love the story here. Cooke's design. might be my all time favorite version of the character. Your gallery though is a good place for me to research that theory ;-)
