DescriptionWell, I am trying to go cash flow positive on my hobbies but when this piece became available to me (thanks Rob!) I took a step backwards in that goal - I mean, how could I not?The art is ~ 12" x 12" but has tremendous impact with an almost palpable spark of creation from the vigorous pencil - at least for me. The art came conservation framed so the picture is not perfect but does provide the gist. I've had The Devil's Lake S&N print for decades and always was one of my favorites from BWS Gorblimey years - of course, the finished piece would be great to add to this preliminary, but I doubt it is moving anytime soon. For those that haven't see the finished painting, I've added an additional image of the print - you may note there is at least one significant difference between the prelim and the final. Can't be sure if still honored but BWS' site has a link to buy a vintage print: https://www.barrywindsor-smith.com/galleria/lakeprint.html Social/Sharing |

As I type this, I'm looking at a copy of the print that's hanging over my bed (I have three copies). One of my all time favorite BWS masterworks. I heard about the sale of the original about 25 years ago and always wondered who the lucky buyer was. Me? I'm more than fine just staring at my beautiful print. Congrats on this amazing and historical piece.

The pain and the agony that makes a powerful impression! BWS's raw pencil strokes is just pure drawing from inspiration.

A fantastic piece that I'm sorry to see go but thrilled it is in your care Mark. I think it's far more than a preliminary and in fact a detailed and vigorous ffinished irst version!! This is the spark of first life for this wonderful and emotional artwork.

Great looking prelim piece, cool to see process and the detail and design still makes this piece look nearly done.

It's easy to see why you could not let it pass you by: the pencil work is mesmerizing! BWS really gives his all when inspiration knocks! Clealry a masterpiece on its own!

Wonderful pickup! I never got the print, but I know part of The Devil's Lake was featured on the cover of 'The Studio' and was featured in full in the book 'Masters of Comic Book Art' that I bought around 1979 or 1980. I spent a lot of time staring at this arresting image. It's great to see this more raw and direct preliminary version.

Phenomenal pencil prelim by Barry Windsor-Smith for The Devil's Lake. Gorgeous linework from BWS that almost lets you see how his mind works as he does his pencils. Fantastic pick-up, huge congrats!
