DescriptionThe cover from Cable's first appearance, with Liefeld pencils and McFarlane inks. Just such an iconic cover from the 80s...So whose headshot is that in the UPC code box? It looks a little like a prototype for Cougar, one of the original characters from Youngblood, but I've never figured it out for as long as I've had this cover... Social/Sharing |

WHAT!?! wow! this is major league. Rob Liefeld catches a lot of flack but it's hard to deny the impact of his short run on New Mutants to the Marvel Universe had and will continue to have because of the creation Cable and Deadpool. Arguably the most important superhero creations since wolverine. This is a great cover. I'ma big fan of Rob's early work, What if #7 is still one of my favorite marvel comics and while he didn't the best interior inks during his New mutants run the covers were a different story. Todd really bring a nice polish to Rob's artwork without losing any of the kinetic energy. This is great, always wondered where this cover was, thanks for sharing.

Historic cover for sure. This is indeed Cougar who was intended to be part of the NM title. Why it didn't isn't clear though. It may be he was intended to appear later in the run and Liefeld, thinking of leaving Marvel, kept it for him. Or he decided early on that he was a good character and wanted to retain his ownership.

What took you so long to post this baby? Whatever people may think of the artists, this certainly hits the nostalgic sweet spot for many fans and collectors. Even with Deadpool overtaking Cable in popularity, I think most fans would covet this cover over NM 98. Love the bonus UPC box art. Lol. Cheers! N.
