Description

Commissioned from John in advance of Baltimore Comic Convention 2023.

I am a long time fan of John’s work-including Grendel (God and the Devil), Dr. Mid-Nite, Suicide Squad, and Fashion in Action. I first met John after purchasing a number of his painted pages featuring Charlie, Dr. Mid-Nite’s owl.

I’ve always wanted a commission by John and selected Grendel (Eppy Thatcher) as the subject. John added the owl image as an homage to the story that first made me his fan.

I could not be happier with this piece.

Mixed media: pencil, ink, and colored pencils.

The all important paper surface texture and choice of its base color is vital to making this piece so awesome when building upon it!

John is an absolutely master - what a great piece - and I love how John works something meaningful into each of his commissions. Very very cool.

At first I didn't see the Owl and thought this piece might be missing something. Then I caught sight of it. I still hope to find an owl while out birding. Nice addition to the piece.
