Description

Here’s a unique original! This is an unpublished sample for a TARZAN Sunday page or perhaps it is two dailies drawn on one sheet. The art is by Sam Glanzman (pencils & inks) and written by Joe Gill, the same team who did Charlton Comics’ short-lived and unauthorized Jungle Tales of Tarzan title in the mid-1960s. I asked Sam about the art and he replied as follows: ”The newspaper thing was something that never gelled. done for Charlton. I think Joe Gill wrote it.” That’s all he can remember about it so I can not put a date to the art unfortunately but it is definitely from the the 1960s.

It’s a great sequence with Tarzan falling down the face of a mountain and trying desperately to grab onto something or catch it with his knife to prevent his plunging to his death!

In 1944, Charlton Comics, acting on the mistaken belief that the character had fallen into public domain, brought out an unauthorized comic book adaptation of Tarzan stories, called Jungle Tales of Tarzan. Sam Glanzman drew the title which ran for five issues, without the permission of The Estate Of Edgar Rice Burroughs, as while the stories themselves had indeed fallen out of copyright, Tarzan was still a trademark and the Burroughs estate lawyers quickly brought an end to the comic.

Original measures 23” x 14” with an image area of 17-1/2” x 14”.
