DescriptionIt is an absolute dream come true for me to be able to own a page from this comic. It was one of the first comics I owned as a kid and I have always loved it. When I got a chance to meet Stan Lee in 2006 it was this comic I chose to have him autograph for me (he scripted it). This page features a classic Thor vs. Hulk battle and is from Erik Larsen's first Marvel work. A few of the old word balloons (stats) have fallen off. You can see the glue stains where they used to be. This page has some neat editorial comments in pencil around the whole outside of the page which are hard to read on the scan. Commentary from Erik Larsen on this page: "As plotted, the idea was that Thor had to resort to using his hammer and that, to the Hulk, was a victory because the Hulk said Thor couldn't beat him without it. In that last panel, after having thrown his hammer aside earlier, Thor falls to the ground and it's sitting there in front of his face. On the following page, after being wailed on some more Thor made a mad dash for the hammer and that was changed to him catching it. What I had talked to Shooter about was finally answering the question of who was stronger and the two of us plotted it so there was an answer but Stan scripted it so that, again, there was no definitive answer." More from Erik Larsen on this issue, posted on Facebook 12/28/12 (Stan Lee's 90th birthday!)- "The year was 1985. I'd already been making comics professionally for a few years and corresponding with Jim Shooter trying to worm my way into Marvel. I finally met Shooter at the Chicago Comic Con. He flipped through my stack of sample pages and said, "So you're a professional now?" "Yes," I said. Shooter asked, "How would you like to draw an issue of Marvel Fanfare?" I suggested plotting it at the show. Shooter agreed. I sat down with Jim Shooter at the hotel bar and we kicked around a rough plot for a Hulk Vs. Thor story. I went home and drew the story we'd plotted, putting copious (and often hilariously out of character) notes all over the margins. I sent in the pages and waited. If nothing else--I had some killer samples that I could show folks to line up more assignments (which I did). Jim Shooter chose his favorite inker and writer to work on my first Marvel assignment: Vinnie Colletta and Stan Lee. My first Marvel job sat on the shelf for a while. It finally saw the light of day in 1987 as Thor #385. I'd made it." Social/Sharing |

638 views on this masterpiece and not even one comment? Well then, it's certainly overdue. "Congratulations", Joe. This has always been a favorite story of mine as well.

Awesome page!! I also loved this comic as a kid!! Read it 1,000 times. Hulk and Thor beat the daylights out of each other. Erik Larson showed me on the next page, panel 5 the hammer is still there on the sidewalk. (Above Hulk's shoulder). Such a great issue, and you've got a great page. I just had a Thor 385 signed by Stan Lee too. Here is a link: http://www.myslabbedcomics.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=23988&GSub=658
