DescriptionMarvel has recently been digging deep to publish some hidden treasures by some of their most famous artists. With the re-launch of the Punisher with issue #1, they decided to put Mike Zeck in the spotlight and publish some of his lesser known (but spectacular) pieces as incentive covers. This was originally published in 1986 as the first portfolio plate in Editions Deesse's Punisher portfolio. That portfolio was limited to 999 copies. The portfolio was later reprinted in the US as an "unlimited" color portfolio. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest Punisher images that Zeck ever produced -simple, but captures the spirit of the character perfectly. It was done right after the conclusion of the Punisher Limited Series. It's a prized piece in my collection and I'm glad to see it celebrated 32 years later as a cover. Exhibited in 2014 at the Mike Zeck "Raw Fury" exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco. There are two variant editions of this book. The color version was released a 1:100 variant and the B&W was released as a 1:500 variant. To those who love this image as much as I do, good luck tracking down a copy of the 1:500 variant! Whoa!!! "Spectacular" doesn't even cover this one! Zeck's Punishers are the ultimate versions of the Punisher to me. So jealous. Congrats Charles!!!

That is an incredible Punisher image—there really is no better artist for the character than Zeck. Dramatic composition and stunning detail and personality. It’s perfect.

It's always a fun argument/discussion to choose an artist's single best piece EVER. Hard to settle on a definitive selection, but I imagine this piece would get plenty of votes. About as good as it gets from Zeck.
