Description

A masterpiece of composition from the height of Ditko's run. I love the way the camera angle continues to change from inside the building to outside, using the window grids to delineate the point of view. Also, the brushwork showing the Crimemaster's shadow in the brick pattern. Some of Ditko's classic facial expressions and body language on display - from the shock of JJJ and Spidey to the cool expression of Foswell as he predicts what happened outside their window. I remember this page from reading Marvel Tales as a kid and I always loved the close up shots of Spidey's head in the bottom pannels.

This page is also cited in the Ditko biography, Strange and Stranger: the World of Steve Ditko, as one of the first examples of Objectivism in his work. It is the police who capture and deal final punishment to the villian, not the superhero - demonstrating Objectivism's black and white views on authority.

I love this page and think it is one of the best examples of Ditko's skills as a storyteller.

Great page by the first and best Spidey artist/co-creator.

You are right, it's masterful. The window as the framing device is brilliant. It starts out with a tight closeup and then pulls further back until the fourth panel which switches the angle to the Crime Master and then, there's the window again, only now from the inside looking out. It's fascinating how he manages to move the story along both inside and outside the building.

This page deserves more than 3 comments. I especially enjoy your write up and musings on Ditko's approach. He did more with/within panels than any artist I can think of. Congratulations on a wonderful page.

Simply spectacular.  One of the things I think makes this one so special is the 'presence' of the artist on this page; personality, politics, and sheer artistic prowess.  Far more here than on an action splash, honestly.  Obviously Mr. Ditko was at the peak of his powers in this period (I think even moreso than the end of his ASM run), and to have the cojones to allow the police to get the collar while all the main players of this 'flagship' book are conversing and observing is downright shocking, and unmistakably Ditko (thanks for pointing out the 'Strange and Stranger' passage; that's a REALLY great point!)

The craft present on this page (from the Crime Master's shadow on the bricks to the right angles everywhere, with the window panes and roof ledges) is dizzying.  What a glorious example, and a wondrous piece in your stunning collection!
