Description

Largely thanks to the Chicago Tribune newspaper Chicago became a major center for newspaper comic strips and a few years later animation. There were also soon to be developed ties between the paper and the large local film industry when Selig films decided to do tie in novelizations in the Tribune newspaper for chapters in the serials they were producing.

The popularity of comic strips caused many younger people to develop strips of their own to present to papers.

These are early Amos Roach strips - which developed out of a series called schnus and pus . Shnus was soon dropped and pus/Roach was on his own.

I have not found where these were published they may be high school work or done for a Chicago neighborhood paper this is before he moved to McHenry Illinois. I have photocopies of 100 other Roach Original daily strips that I have owned over the years- the later ones were published and the earlier ones are mysteries as to where if anywhere they appeared.

I think the brick gag predates Herriman's use of the idiom. Note this room is best read if sorted in order by number.

Thanks for all of the info. I have 4 original Andy Hettinger "Roach" strips I bought at a flea market in Chicago many years ago but I could never find any information about them. They are dated 1912, 1913. It's great to finally find out something about them.
