DescriptionAfter a three-year hiatus from John Byrne commissions, I decided to jump back into the pool with both feet at the end of 2011. Departing from my formula of team + headquarters + vehicle for previous Byrne commissions, I decided on one of my favorite scenes from Giant-Size X-Men #1. While Dave Cockrum rendered the scene perfectly in that issue and indelibly etched it in my mind, I always felt that the Battle Royale with all 13 new and old members of the X-Men vs. Krakoa deserved more than a single panel.Byrne is the artist who I associate with the X-Men more than any other. From his definitive run alongside Chris Claremont from 1977-1980 to X-Men: The Hidden Years a decade later and his many other returns to the team over the years, Byrne’s influence on the X-Men is tough to match. Byrne has done a number of great pieces for me in the past, and he’d already drawn the battle in flashback scenes that appeared in Uncanny X-Men #138 and Alpha Flight #17, so I knew that he would definitely do an amazing job with the commission. My input to Byrne’s rep Jim Warden was as follows. “I’d like to do a recreation of the X-Men’s battle with Krakoa from Giant-Size X-Men #1. In terms of orientation, I had it portrait in my mind, but I would defer to JB on the best way to do it. For character placement, I would make a few comments: I really like the way JB did this scene in Uncanny X-Men #138 as compared to Cockrum’s original in Giant-Size X-Men #1 with the flyers in the foreground, but maybe with Sunfire less prominent to allow room for the other characters.” “A couple of touches that would be nice: (1) Wolverine in mid-air having been thrown by Colossus as a Fastball Special. (2) A couple of Bamfs for Nightcrawler. (3) A sonic scream signature for Banshee that has rings instead of a straight beam. I think that’s how it’s supposed to be, right? (4) It would be nice to see Marvel Girl’s face.” It turns out that I was wrong on Banshee’s sonic scream signature, but he certainly delivered on all the other requests. Wow! I could not be happier with the end result! Thanks JB! Social/Sharing |

He was my favorite New-X-Men. Closely followed by Colossus & Night Crawler. To be honest back then. I'd rather they kept Thunderbird & had killed off Wolverine myself.

The scale of these 20" x 30" pieces is really amazing and the scans definitely don't do them justice.
