DescriptionI LOVE Ivan Reis’ art and I LOVE Tom Taylor’s writing so when they were announced as the team of this one shot, I was looking forward to it.I was able to obtain this page from the book, which is my absolute favorite. No big Batman or Robin shots, not fight between the Bat and Ras but a quiet and (very) emotional moment within the story. True to his exceptional writing skills, this is Tom Taylor at his very best, finding JUST the right emotional beats within his characters to enhance and elevate his story. Basically, we previously learned that Ras was saved from death by wolves when he was a child. He later saved a young wolf pup from animal slavers and was friend with her for nineteen years. After his latest resurrection, he comes to her as she is dying from cancer and gives her the medical release she needs from this plane of existence. This is the next page after that, when they both are saying final goodbyes to each other. Now if you have ever said goodbye to a loved one during your lifetime, especially an animal friend, I find this page will resonate with you like few comic book pages can. Both the wolf and Ras are crying, and this hardened immortal eco-terrorist is completely crushed by pain. Some cynical reader could find this a bit on the nose as regards the character in a “even Hitler loved his dog” kind of way. I find it authentic, and it adds a logical and emotional layer to Ras. Just read this first line of dialogue “you were a miracle” and tell me it’s not perfection, that it is not something anyone would think, feel or say in the same circumstances... (Because to this animal lover, living every day close to an animal -even a domesticated species- indeed feels like a constant miracle if you look at it with an evolutionary perception). Now as regards the art, the horizontal layout is a great choice by Ivan as each panel literally and visually adds to the emotional weight of the scene. The first panel is already super emotional with the wolf in pain finding the strength to lap at Ras. You’ll note that the inks obscured Ras smiling in this one which I find was probably not the best choice as showing the smile would have helped build the intensity within the page by beginning with a more positive visual information (down to a negative conclusion). The second sees Ras delicately taking her head into his hands and begins crying. On the contrary, here the inks obscured what seems like a slight smile which I find was a good choice as it does help building the tension. Then the partial close ups on both crying as she is going away is quite the most intense panel in the page. And finally, the fourth panel which I find is artistic PERFECTION. She is gone as the camera focuses on Ras crying his soul out as he very gently brushes her fur for the last time. The fact that Ivan chose to keep her in panel, while as a reader you only basically see Ras, is quite ingenious. (Note that as a good attentive storyteller, Ivan gave the colorist instructions on how to color the backgrounds in panel 1, 2 and 4 to subtly underline the building tension within the page). Let me end that Ivan’s recent use of washes is doing wonder as regards filling the pages and doing it with mood to spare. Her name was Najia. Social/Sharing |

One of the best overall books of 2023. A classic for years to come.

I definitely would NOT say that I'd be more emotional over a beloved pet dying than I would over another human being, but I do get the emotions involved when pets are a part of the family, especially for long periods of time. Reis is a brilliant artist and his sense of realism is perfectly suited for the more human moments like the one playing out in this scene. These pencils are absolutely stunning and so is the storytelling.

Phenomenal page. Ivan's artwork elevated the story. I did not follow these 'One Bad Day' one-shots and saw a preview of this artwork from Chiaroscuro Studios. It made me find the book. The book struck a chord with me as well. I snagged a couple of pages from it myself. If you tire of animal trophy hunting, dog fights, environmental abuse and the like, this one-shot is for you. You may find yourself rooting Ra's!

The details in these tight panels is ridiculously on point for the strong emotions it supports. Reis's art has been in my list and at some point I look to check that beautiful box. Congrats on this amazing piece, not in my wheelhouse but absolutely stunning.

I didn't read the story, but your description meshed beautifully with the art. Thanks for sharing.

Reis absolutely doing the job conveying this quieter emotive movement. And seeing in pencil...actually adds to the organic feel of the scene. Good stuff, man. Congrats!

Stunning page by Ivan Reis! The depth of emotion Reiss is able to convey in his pencils is remarkable. You can almost feel the pain Ra's al Ghul is showing on this page. That's a pretty remarkable feat for an artist to pull off, but Reis does it! Fabulous! Congrats on a great pick-up!
