Jack Kirby's "God Turns His Back On the World" is in my Top 10 favorite images by Jack, and would be one of my all-time grail pages of art. Unfortunately for me, the inked page by Mike Royer adorns a special wall at the Kirby household.

I picked up a copy of the Dark Horse portfolio at a con when it came out, and promptly hung "God Turns His Back On the World" in my bedroom. I had a couple roommates back then. One of them, a good friend and guy whose opinion I respected, commented that he didn't care for the piece. Being a civilian and actually not knowing who Jack Kirby was, I paraphrased the description on the back of the portfolio plate. I told him the title of the plate, adding "He doesn't turn his back on the people of the Earth because he doesn't love them. It's just that, in every parents life there comes a time when they must let their children find their own way." He actually stood there for a while. I could tell he was seeing it in a whole new light. He finally said, "Wow, I really like it now!"
