DescriptionNo retelling of my formative teenage years would be complete without mentioning Scott McDaniel's art on Nightwing. Over the course of his forty issues on the streets of Bludhaven, his dynamic sense of motion returned Dick Grayson to his acrobatic roots and defined the character for my generation. To my delight, earlier this month, Scott announced he was getting ready to sell more than 250 new-to-market Nightwing pages. My mind absolutely boggled at the idea of so much goodness being made available at one time, so I made sure to set several reminders for the drop. As always, when the moment came, the hardest part was picking which pages to buy… and choosing them quickly so I wouldn't lose out to other collectors. It's never fun racing for a page, and even less fun when you have to keep yourself from taking detours down nostalgia avenue. Overall though, the nostalgia factor made it a very enjoyable experience. But the best part was interacting with Scott himself, who lived up to his reputation as one of the nice guys in comics. In the midst of getting inundated with purchase requests at the drop, he was quick to respond to my multiple requests and gracious when I shared my love and appreciation for his work. However, he completely outdid himself by taking the time to include a thoughtfully written letter with my pages. Not only did he thank me for giving his art a welcome home, but I really liked what he said about showcasing Nightwing's wide variety of adventures. While there were quite a few action pages I would have loved to add to the collection, I made it a point to choose an array of high-flying moments and quieter ones. In this case, it's one of the high-flying ones. I absolutely love the way Scott uses positive and negative space to create the spotlight effect in the first panel. It grabs your eye and holds it an extra beat before we transition to Nightwing on the run from a hail storm of bullets. Then, to cap it off, Scott delivers the coup de grace of Nightwing leaping off the building, framed in silhouette as the water tower crashes down around him. This is exactly the kind of page I think of when I think of Scott's work, and all of it is beautifully rendered by Karl Story's crisp, clean ink work. What's more, John Constanza's balloon placement does a fantastic job of guiding the eye through the action. Chuck Dixon's words aren't too shabby either. What a treat to add this page to my collection. Seeing it makes me feel seventeen again. Social/Sharing |

A highwire chasedown sequence starting from the recognition of the spotlight down to the destruction of the watertower! The three camera angles are varied and the whole page features that circular motif that McDaniel often uses.
