DescriptionMike Grell's portfolios from the early 80's, 1981's Starslayer: The Log of the Jolly Roger Portfolio and 1980's Warriors: The Mike Grell Portfolio are two of my all-time favorites. So, needless to say, I've been hoping to find anything from either one for some years. Well, just my luck, Anthony happens to showcase Plate 3 from the Warriors Portfolio out of the blue! Honestly, I was kinda stunned at first, but a little head shake to clear my head and a slight delay on my part to see if Rick wanted it first, and here we are!A big thanks to Anthony and the whole Dueling Dealers of Comic Art family!! I couldn't get a decent pic, so just went with Anthony's. Art from 1980 on 20x24 artboard, with an image area of 16x20. Social/Sharing |

Beauty with Grell going full color with not much of any ink outline to get a whole different feel to his artwork!

Stunning Mike Grell plate of Tarzan! Grell was so good at human anatomy and you can really appreciate that here! Tarzan's physique is perfectly depicted and his pose is just iconic! Love the action scene as Tarzan tries to take out a panther that wants him for dinner. The painting on this plate has a beautiful color palette! I love the deep blues contrasted with the light yellow of the background. The golden moon behind the Ape Man perfectly highlights the battle between man and cat! Great pick-up, congrats!

I'm tempted to speculate if this may have been influenced by Neal's SQP Tarzan portfolios (published a couple of years earlier), but that could probably only be confirmed by Grell himself. In any case, it's a striking piece that showcases Mike's considerable painting skills.

Spectaular Grell piece! The moon acting as a spot light and the choice of colors really makes this one stand out. Congrats!
