Description

My friend Eric alerted me to the Carl Barks estate auction at Bonham's in Los Angeles in 2007. He flew down right after Super-con. I loved this image of Scrooge, Donald, and the nephews looking at this book with maps, charts, a world globe, a Roman helmet, and a model sailing ship decorating the scene. So my brother Stuart met up with Eric in LA and bid for me. At the time, I didn't know the background on this piece. Jerry Wiest is selling the remainder of the Barks estate. In one of his 2009 ebay auctions, I discovered a similar compostion with the above title. In this piece, the book's title can be seen as Treasure Troves with the image of an open chest on the backcover. The globe in the foreground is more detailed, the ancient helmet is slightly different, and the small statue has a duck beak and devil's horns. However, the idea changed from visions of adventure, travel, and history to "Uncle Walt's Colectery" with prominent placement of a Snow White figure, a Mickey Mouse doll, a Donald Duck hand puppet, and a Daisy Duck stained glass window behind the group. Small statues or figures appear on shelves to the left: Dumbo, Goofy, Pinocchio, the Big Bad Wolf, and the Three Little Bigs. A Mickey Mouse train appears on a high shelf to the right. I believe this became a painting from which a limited edition lithograph was produced. I much prefer this earlier version.

Some time after this purchase, I discovered some version of this composition was used for the cover of Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #717. I include it as an addtional image.

Amazing piece of Americana. Love Scrooge and Barks is a master storyteller who can craft a story with just one simple image.
