Would you be able to share more details regarding this piece ? Was this art team supposed to step in and replace Jim Lee ?

Sorry, I don't have any information on why this piece was produced. My guess would be that since Jim Lee was typically behind deadline during this period, this cover was commissioned just in case.

This can't be an unpublished cover to X-Men #3 -- X-Men #3 was created in mid-1991 and hit stands in October 1991. This piece is dated 1992. Maybe it was the cover to a reprint of some sort? Or a promotional comic? Where did you get the data that this was supposed to be a cover for X-Men #3?
