Description

I'd like to have been a writer for DC Comics in the Silver Age, but the next best thing is asking talented present day artists like Brendon and Brian Fraim to whip up a picture from an idea of mine, in this case the splash page for an untold tale of the Legion in which the clunky but oh-so-mean computer Computo tries to drain the brains of three Legionnaires to acquire their powers. Below is what I wrote to request the drawing, and I think Brendon and Brian did a fantastic job:

Hi, Brendon and Brian,

I’d like to commission you for an 11 x 17 nine character pen & ink commission featuring eight members of the Silver Age Legion of Super Heroes and their nemesis Computo. The drawing would be a splash page to an Untold Tale of the Legion, taking place just a few months after Computo has killed one of Triplicate Girl’s bodies (Adventure Comics #340), and shortly after Ferro Lad and Princess Projectra have joined the Legion. The premise is that Computo has kidnapped and immobilized Saturn Girl, Dream Girl and Projectra to siphon off their brain-related abilities.

The central image would be of the 3 heroines, imprisoned side-by-side in individual body-sized test tubes. The girls are all stiff as boards, in a trance, with electrodes connecting their heads to the tops of the test tubes. The large, clunky robot Computo, protected by a force field like Brainiac 5’s force field, is directly behind them, his tentacle arms twisted around the struggling Sun Boy and Ferro Lad, while Superboy pounds away at the force field to no avail, and Brainiac 5 and Duo Damsel lay prostrate on the ground beneath the captured heroines.

The text involved would be as follows:

(Logo at top of page, as if interior splash page of an issue of “Adventure Comics” in the mid-1960’s:)

An Untold Tale of

The Legion of Super-Heroes

(Roll Call Scroll on left side of page:)

Roll Call:

Brainiac 5

Dream Girl

Duo Damsel

Ferro Lad

Princess Projectra

Saturn Girl

Sun Boy

Superboy

(Text in box at bottom of page:)

One thousand years in the future the rogue robot Computo seeks to acquire the powers of telepathy, precognition and illusion-casting by draining the brains of Saturn Girl, Dream Girl, and Princess Projectra. Who can save the three Legionnaires from becoming

“The Brain Brides of Computo”

(end of text for drawing)

All characters would be in the costumes that they wore in the original Adventure Comics run of the Legion in the mid ‘60’s. The cover to Adventure Comics #340 has a good image of Computo, and the cover to Adventure Comics #352 has good images of both Ferro Lad and Princess Projectra. Please let me know your availability and total costs and I’ll mail a check out to you. Looking forward to hearing from you!
