DescriptionI should start by saying that I really enjoyed the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Frankly, I think most of the Marvel Studios movies have been really well done. And I can’t be the only one that finds it amazing that 50 year old characters are still driving such attention in this day and age. But, wait, you say. The Guardians of the Galaxy in the movie are based on the team first introduced to the world in 2008. That’s not 50 years old! Lee and Kirby weren’t involved with this group, not this movie. Ah. Not so fast. Sure, some characters like Rocket are fairly new, but some of the characters in the movie are far older. For example, the Collector was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck and first appeared in Avengers #28 in May 1966. Even older was Groot, who was created by Lee and Kirby, and first appeared in Tales of Suspense #13, back in 1960, pre dating the Fantastic Four!! Want more? How about the primary bad guy in the film? Yes, none other than Ronan the Accuser!

Amazing Ron, I agree the movie was spectacular and the history of these characters is equally entertaining. An amazing first appearance page! Thanks for letting us all live vicariously through you.

There are so many great things about this page - but the Thing's dialogue is the winner, for sure! Well, maybe the composition of the top panel...or the Kirby 'crackle' surrounding the Thing...either way, phenomenal page - that top panel has to be stunning in person.

Some months back, a collector friend was visiting and as you might imagine, most of the day was spent discussing comic art. Inevitably, Kirby’s name came up in the conversation. Without making any judgments about my friend, he expressed the opinion that as the hobby gets older and older, it would eventually be populated by a generation of collectors who could care less about Kirby. Not wanting to argue with my guest, I simply chuckled and let it slide. After seeing this page and reading your description, I now realize that my friend just needs to sit down with you for a few minutes. I’m sure he would come away from the experience much more enlightened.

Nice page, Ron. The Kirby Krackle and the Thing's contorted figure in the last panel would have sold it for me, key villain or not.

The FF are fine. Hes a public accuser only and they are on private, not public property. He's powerless.
