DescriptionThe great creative team of David Michelinie and Bob Layton crafted and nurtured Iron Man into a more complete character, giving him a new weakness (alcohol), a better supporting cast, more humanity and plenty of fun new and exciting armor variants. All of the Bob Layton issues were very well rendered, but, in my opinion, the art was at its best when John Romita, Jr. pencilled the book. Romita's excellent figure work and captivating layouts perfectly complemented Layton's fastidious drawing of the armor and attention to detail. This page blew me away when I opened up the issue back in 1980, and it did the same when I opened up the package that arrived the other day. One of my favorite splashes from this legendary run.Social/Sharing |

Growing up a Marvel junkie, my favorite titles were the team books, the team-up books, and for single character titles, my boy Spidey, Conan, and MOKF. Iron Man was always sort of a guilty pleasure for me. Very cool, but never quite a fave. That all changed during the Layton/Romita Jr/Layton era that began with the classic alcoholism issue! This is as good a single image page as you're going to get from that classic period, with IM almost filling the page in all his glory! Thanks for reminding me just how cool old Shellhead really was!

It's amazing to see such a classic like this one. Vintage JRJR! I loved his stuff back then, his pencils were the best around. Great piece

Artemis This is a blue chip Iron Man splash. Probably the best I have seen from the JR JR/Layton run (which for me is the best Iron Man team ever)

A stellar page from one of the best creative teams of all time! Those issues never get old- and compared to today's comics, there was SO MUCH story told each issue! As a kid, these issues made me an avid reader- often asking my mom how to pronounce or define a word or two each issue. Great page!

How did i miss this one? Gorgeous full figure Iron Man on a page one splash! Stunning work by John Romita Jr. and Bob Layton. It's rare to find an Iron Man as large and well-drawn as this. JrJr was the perfect artist to work on Iron Man. He really knew how to make the superhero look even more heroic. And Bob Layton's inks were superb on this title. Great pick-up!
