DescriptionYes, nostalgia is a disease and makes you pay and pay and pay...I know every page of Batman #232 like the back of my hand because it was one of the first superhero comics I read as a kid (possibly *the* first). Not in its original American edition mind you but in the 1975 hardback British reprint (published by Brown and lumped together with Bill Finger and Wayne Boring's "The Girl Who Didn't Believe in Superman!"). That one had a machine font and a truncated Denny O'Neill script. Imagine my surprise when I read the slightly more verbose original script in the 80s. This is one of those infrequent Batman stories where the script and art is littered with clues as to the real perpetrator ("Ras Al Ghul is evil, Batman, the cover says so!"). There's even a rock formation with Ras' face on it (!). Don't think I caught on as a kid though. Here's another clue - intentional or not who can tell. If you consider page 5 and page 7 of the issue, you'll find that Bruce is shown looking down in close-up on Page 5 (2nd Panel) and Page 7 (1st Panel). In the background, Ras Al Ghul (on page 5) is found in the position of "Joe Chill" (on page 7) - thus laying the foundation for Ras Al Ghul's future role as Batman's "father (killer)" (by marriage) and nemesis. Nostalgia sucks and it's even worse when Batman #232 is one of the most reprinted Adams Batman stories. There are 9 pages with Ras in the issue (2 or 3 of which would be beyond the reach of mere mortals). There are quite a number of pages with better art in the issue but so what right...? Adams and Giordano were probably still working out how to draw and ink Ras on page 4 and 5 of the story - they figured it out by the close of the comic. It seems like they had no problems with depicting Talia on that final page though. I wonder why... Social/Sharing |

As I may have mentioned in one of our correspondences, there are different levels to the wickedness of nostalgia. The nostalgia for a Batman story from your youth with art by Adams & Giordano (Mr. O'Neil's verbosity, a few artistic kinks and the outsized costs involved in acquiring this page aside) seems rather benign to me. Plus, looking at it with "adult" eyes, even you should admit that the art ain't half bad. Cheers to your inner child on this one. He made the right choice.
