Description

The Airtight Garage is one of my favorite comics ever, and that's just one reason why I overpaid for this example. Another reason would be the strong impression this image made on me the first time I saw it – it’s certainly Moebius’ most exuberant drawing up to that point in the story (this page is from the third episode).

And then there are the details: we’re looking out from a garage in the Garage; the protagonist (the engineer Barnier) is actually looking out at us (with her back turned) through her side mirror; on the left hand side of the bottom panel, there’s an advertisement with a masked-goggled man who as it happens appears in a later episode – a kind of homage to the Phantom etc.. Not that I suspect that this was all planned; the early pages of The Airtight Garage are more like acts of improvisation; a kind of stream of consciousness writing-drawing on the part of Moebius. For example: why does Moebius describe the Tar’hai Otter sculpture (which looks a bit like a sphinx) in the background and then have Barnier shout “Par le farahon….” Is this level of the Garage an Egyptian playground (pyramids do appear in later episodes) or did it just seem like a good idea at the time? The reality is that it doesn’t matter because the pleasure is entirely in the freestyle writing-drawing.

As Moebius writes in his introduction to the album: “The Airtight Garage is not a closed work. It is full of openings into, and correspondences with, other systems. With the expansion generators, all the stories that I have ever done can really take place in Major Grubert’s universe, or a universe that does not specifically belong to Grubert, but works on the same principles. It is a Moebius universe, really, where the whole is contained in the part, and the part in the whole.”

"Anything can still happen…" Yes, it truly feels that way when you take in Moebius' work.

The one thing I have learnt from this hobby, Suat, is that you never say "overpaid" and "Moebius" in the same line. :) Congratulations on a great example.

Bravo! Beautiful writeup! I so so wanted to get Airtight Garage pages when I got my Incal pages, way back when. I was sorely tempted to jump back into the buying fray when I saw this page. I'm not at all surprised it went well past the estimate. It's a joyful piece!

Just randomly looking around CAF today, catching up on months of not really looking at stuff. Many nice things of course, but not too much that makes my heart race. But then I see this... Wow, this is really impressive.
