DescriptionOn school trips, I remember going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, looking at the pencil and ink prelims of the old masters (Rembrandt, Degas, etc.) and walking away simply amazed at how they created beautiful images with the smallest pen line or the slightest brush of a pencil. As a collector (of admittedly a very different type of art), I've been looking for a nice John Cassaday piece for awhile. When this piece came, and I first looked at it, I had that same feeling of amazement at how Cassaday has created beautiful forms, shapes and details with beguiling ease. Perhaps most suprising, is that I blew up a high res scan of Sonja's face to about 1000% increase in size. Amazingly, even at that magnification, everything still looks beautiful, Sonja's pupils are exactly the same size, and exactly even, her lips have a certain ambiguous smile, and her face straddles the look of warrior and siren. Combine this with a cinematic layout that gives me a visceral thrill every time I look at this piece, and I'm left amazed again every time I look at this piece, just as in my youth. This cover is a bunch of firsts for me. In addition for being my first Red Sonja and Cassaday piece, it is my first number 1 cover, first art as a poster, and my first art purchased from Canada. On that note, many thanks to the great Canadian collector "Gentleman" Gin Kung for showing me some wonderful "northern" hospitality in the sale of this piece. Social/Sharing |

If he keeps this up, Cassaday will be remembered as one of the giants of this era.

Artemis, a stunning cover! congrats! A word of advise - try not to gaze at this Red Sonja masterpiece too closely - in front of the Mrs!

Considering this is your first, it is indeed quite a first. The flow of light to dark from top to bottom, not to mention everything that draws your eye to Red Sonja, not to mention John Cassaday's amazing work. This is a very beautiful first and quite wonderful to see. Congrats!

Cassaday will be one of our greats!! Even though I hate to admit it, his work on on X-men has at least started his rise. His work on other books like Sonja only make it more apparent.
