DescriptionThis is a colored recreation of the cover to master illustrator Heinrich Kley’s book, “Skizzenbuch” (German for “sketchbook”), published in 1909. One of the nicer Kley pieces I have seen, featuring one of his most iconic animal archetypes. Per illustration expert Zaddick L, Kley liked to take his most important sketches and improve and color them, which he did here. Like much of Kley’s art, this is absurd, funny, and disturbing, all at the same time. Heinrich Kley was a German illustrator in the early 20th century who delighted in the preposterous, and practically invented anthropomorphism. Kley was one of Walt Disney’s favorite artists, and Disney openly acknowledged Kley’s strong influence on his movies including, most notably, Fantasia. Disney owned over 350 works by Kley, which the Walt Disney Family Museum regularly displays. Art was republished as part of a portfolio in the 1920s. Watercolor on paper (15” x 9”).Social/Sharing |

Beautiful and very representative piece by this master, the connection with Disney makes his art even more interesting!

Really lovely work, Ben. The nuances of Kley's understanding of line + form are shown so beautifully in this piece. Big congrats to you!

Thanks for the concise and informative write-up Ben! I didn't know anything about this artist previously. Congrats on a lovely and kind of bizarre drawing!
