DescriptionHere's a fun page from the Astonishing X-Men annual by Travel Foreman.I have been a fan of Travel's meticulous art since his Class War days so seeing him take on mainstream characters has been a treat, especially the X-Men. This page made an impression on me when I read that issue. It is probably the only one and all that I remember from it, actually. So I was delighted when Travel put it up for sale (and that I was quick enough to grab it). The way Archangel appears in front of the bad guy is so ominous in the first panel (I don't really know or remember how Angel can become Archangel on a whim nor do I care). Like some kind of demonic angel. It sets quite a mood for the scene. Then in the second panel, as the prey tries to bargain for his life, you can tell by Archangel's face and even more so by the fact that his wings are closing in on the villain that he has made his decision...You will notice that even if panel one established the Angel is bigger than him, Travel reinforced the difference in size here, having the villain crouching a bit, which ultimately gives a sense of predation to the scene. And then a close up on Archangel's stone-cold, merciless face as he does what needs to be done. The wings cross over, some drops of blood fying around and "thud thud thud" rolls the head on the ground... This is elliptic storytelling at its best, proving (again) that you don't need to show gore to be (super) effective. Social/Sharing |

I really like his tight pencils. Archangel looks great! I can't deny however, that I really dislike it when pencillers leave the backgrounds so empty that the colorist has to come in and fill them up with so many digital coloring effects.

This is such a dynamic page, it doesn't need the word balloons to tell a story. A great piece!

The superdetail and blank background causes a forced focus and Foreman relishes in it with no flaws to hide.

Really impressive pencils! And I feel bad for that dude cuz there was no getting out of that situation in one piece. Huge congrats!

"The sign says no door-to-door salesman..." SCHLUNK! I'm very much on your page about not needing the gore to successfully pull off this scene. Letting the readers imagination fill in the gaps draws them in much more than simply telling. Great point, and cool Angel page. Congrats!

Warren's empire all started from a small barbershop on the corner. "Razor Cuts"

I REALLY love this page, F M. I don't think it suffers one whit from the lack of backgrounds, but functions like one of those shots in movies that isolates the foreground action to underscore the moment. As you pointed out, the predation factor on this one is off the charts, and Warren is simultaneously raising up to strike, while hypnotizing and wrapping his prey in his (metaphorical) coils here. All while he is as cold-blooded as can be, more machine than man - twisted and evil... (no, wait, that's Vader...). Beautiful pick up, F M!

This truly is a great page - I was a little late in trying to nab it myself. Love the pencil rendering, and the storytelling through 3 splashes is top notch. Cold blooded Warren. Congrats!
