DescriptionI've been looking for a nice example from the early Avengers run with Jack's pencils. This page comes from Issue #5, the month after the reintroduction of Captain America into the Silver Age. No one has seen (or admitted to having seen) the original artwork to Issue #4, so this issue is really what is out there in terms of Original Art.This issue, "The Invasion of the Lava Men," has the full team in action and helping each other out - thus the need for the team-up. This page is neat in that it's the first time in the Silver Age that we see Cap's throw his shield and have it come back to him "as if it had a life of it's own!!" The volume Kirby was putting out in the early days of Marvel was astounding. The inkers were working fast just to keep up. In fact, there were four inkers involved in the first six issues of the book. Thrilled to add this small piece of history to my collection. Social/Sharing |

Incredible example of the genius that is Jack Kirby. His Captain America is the standard by which all others artists have worked. And you have a moment of history with the shield throw no less.
Congratulations on picking up this gem and appreciate you choosing to share with us all here on CAF!

Kirby sparked the imagination of children everywhere and continues to influence creators of today with this Marvel magic. The larger than life action bombastically exploded off the page and into our psyches! Silver Age Cap freshly thawed out!

What a great page! Kirby (& Lee) were sparking out seminal ideas that set the intricacy of the Marvel universe with alarming alacrity at this point.

"Nice example"? "Small piece of history"? C'mon, Ron, you're the king of the understatement! Personally, I would go hyperbolic! Huge congrats!

Fabulous page from a storied time! Loved Kirby's work on these '60s Avengers issues. This is a primo example of the excitement that Kirby could create with his nonstop action-packed pages. Especiallly love that third panel with Cap's shield bouncing right back into his hand! Great pick-up!
