Description"The time has come," the Walrus said,"To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax-- Of cabbages--and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot-- And whether pigs have wings... The above quote is from "Alice in Wonderland" if you did not recongnize it. It's also the theme from an Issac Asimov based story “Murder in the Urth Degree”. What does all this rambling have to do with anything? This ramble begins my "What price art" posts for the next few weeks. I attended the Atlanta Dragon*Con the previous weekend, and took off a few days in Florida. I usally pick out a "book on tape" which is usally on CD or mp3 these days for the long drive. This time I picked Issac Asimov's "The Robots of Dawn", the third in his robot trilogy. I knew his first two books had been written in the 50's. When "The Robots of Dawn" started talking about robot masterbation, I stated thinking "when the hell was this written"? Turn out it was 1983, about 25 years after the first and second book (apparently, Asimov didn’t escape the 60’s unscathed). And why do I care if this book was written in 1983 (keep on rambling)? Because in my opinion, a lot of what is going on in the comic book world these days originated from the 80’s. The latest in the series of “comic book flop” movies over the last year was "Scott Pigrim vs The World". This was another case in which I first learned of the comic from other sources (aka the movie), and went back and read the comic after the movie (and actually went back and watched the movie again) .If you haven't seen it by now, you've probably missed your chance. It didn't exactly burn up the box office. Once of the reviews I read as to why it bob-ombed were that people over 30 don't get It. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is basically about a group of twenty-something douche bags. It's a movie about the kinds of individuals anyone over 30 with a job would like to see introduced to a cattle prod. The review also thought people under 30 didn’t get It. While Scott Pilgrim was about teens and recent teens, the way it goes about telling its story isn't exactly teen friendly. The film is steeped in video game culture which, while that might seem like something the kids can latch on to, in this case isn't. That's evident right from the movie's first frame where the Universal Pictures logo is redone using 8-bit graphics which look like they were created for the original NES. The movie's steeped not just in video games, but in classic video game references which kids probably aren't interested in and even if they were, almost certainly wouldn't get. Personally, being over 40, I got it. And personally these days, I usually have a higher opinion of people in I meet in their 20s than people I meet in their 30s. This movie was written for people from the 80's stuck in their 20's, which finally brings me to my point. Most of the art collectors I see featured at this site are usually some “38 to 43 year old professional" who is trying to recapture the past, and has the money to do it. This, in my opinion, is one of the main driving forces in comic art prices these days, the children of the 80's recreating the past. AND THAT FINALLY LEADS ME TO THESE TWO PAGES OF ART!!! Besides returning to the DC Universe both in cartoon and comic format, the "Hall of Doom" pops up in cartoons all the time (Duck Dodgers, South Park, and that king of 80's references, Family Guy). The 80's are returning and the 80's RULE!!! If you don't believe me, then I'll see you at Wall Street:Money Never Sleeps and Tron: Legacy this fall…ramblerambleramble… Social/Sharing |
