Description...I did manage to track down the guy who original bought this one, and managed to persaude him out of it with a little $$$. I asked him why he sold it, and he said he was buying a house. I think I helped him with that! This is actually not the page I ever paid the most money for. It is probably not the page that I own that is worth the most (yet...I'm guessing that would be my Watchmen page). It is not even necessarily my favorite pages or a grail page. But it is what I challange to be, THE BEST DAMN PAGE OF ORIGINAL COMIC ART EVER!!! The featured splash page, by George Perez, features Superman, the world greatest and most iconic superhero from the DC universe, getting smacked in the puss by Thor's hammer from the Marvel Universe. This was one of the few splash pages from the JLA / Avengers 2003-2004 crossover, and event that was over two decades in the making. This page all fell under the spell of "collectors fever". I don't know if I have used this quote recently, but "Comic books, even rare ones, exists in multiple copies. But there's only one of each page of original artwork. If comic books are like cocaine, artwork is like crack."Mike Gold - Playboy (December 2004). Get out the pipe, boys... Social/Sharing |

Jim, I definately lilke the art and love the cocaine/crack quote but as good as this page is, it's not the best.

To Quote Abraham Lincoln..."OH YEAH!". Actually, it's not my most favorite page that I own, but I still throw the challange out there. Never claimed it was the most expensive, historical, original, rarest, greatest subject matter, artistically fine, nor by the greatest artist (ok this is George Perez, so I may claim that), but I want someone else to show me "The Greatest"...now make Muhammad Ali sounds...

I will avoid the "greatest" controversy and simply state this series was, artistically, probably the crowning glory in Pérez's storied career. It was a love letter to American comic book superheroes in general and the Bronze Age in particular. And this page, no pun intended, definitely carried a very high impact, because, let's face it, this is what those of us around at the time waited 20 years for; this is what we paid to see.

The crowing achievement for any collection. The power coming off the page is amazing. Perez, at the top of hsi game, drawing the biggest book of his career.

Superman had it coming! One of the best pages from the greatest crossover in comics history.
