DescriptionThose of you that know me have heard me talk about growing up devouring every book I could ever get my hands on that had anything to do with Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard. Part of that fascination came right from seeing the covers to any one of those books. The minute you see one, you get sucked in to the fantasy worlds of these two authors. I used to read the books and refer back to the covers all the time and just stare at them lost in the fantasy worlds that these artist would paint. As I got older, I started to realize that all those book covers were real paintings and out there some place. When I started collecting art, my first goal was to get Conan and John Carter of Mars art. Then I started branching out and played around with all kinds but I always dreamed of owning ANY book cover from both of these authors. Well, this past year, I realized part one of my ultimate goal by landing the cover painting to the Wizard of Venus from ERB. WOW! 1/2 way there! Fast forward to todays mail, and I now own the second 1/2 of my grail goal! So, with that part of the background done, on to the art! Most of you know REH as the writer of Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane and Red Sonya/ Sonja among others. He wrote many stories but also had another love. Poetry and verse! The first time that he submitted these poems was in 1928 to the New York Publishing House who returned the manuscript with a statement that "they were not at that time publishing verse". Wow, OK, so there they sat until the next time which was not until 1970 in a limited edition of 549 copies put out by Donald M. Grant. That sold out pretty quick! The next time was in 1977 by Science Fiction Graphics with a slightly larger edition of 1500 copies. This was put out as a hardback with 60 pages and had 6 black and white interior pages and the cover all being done by Marcus Boas. This painting is from the poem called "Rebel" and was used twice. Once on page 29 and then for the cover. AND NOW, IT RESIDES IN MY HOUSE!!! OWWW! Sorry, I just pinched myself again to see if I was just dreaming....:)As a couple of last notes, the back of the painting has one of the lines from the poem called Rebel. "I snatched her and fled fast while on our tracks the host of hell came flying on the blast" The size of this painting is a 16x20 oil on canvas board. I could honestly say that If I never got another piece of art, I would be satisfied, But then, like you guys, I'm still a collector and theres always other art. But I know 2 pieces that will forever hang on my walls with this being one of them! Social/Sharing |

Congratulations on getting the second part of your grail Ken. I know nothing about this, but it looks pretty cool and it's great to see you fulfill a "dream"! Oh, and since you now know which 2 pieces will forever remain on your walls, that means I'll be expecting to hear from you shortly in order to strike a deal for a certain other piece named Spartacus! No use in you having that crap when you've got these 2 holy grails, is there?

I can see how this particular visual manifestation of Mr. Howard's work would have haunted you through the years. Not only do the backstory and rare collectibility of this piece leave a strong impression, but the artwork itself taps into something dark and sinister at the edge of the imagination. I'm in awe that you were able to make this life-long dream come true. I'll be sure not to wake you if you are, in fact, dreaming. Congrats on the good fortune, Ken!

Hi Ken, Just a quick note concerning your amazing "Singers in the Shadows" cover painting.......Marcus told me that he wrote the line from "Rebel" on the back of the painting himself....
