DescriptionGreen Arrow & Speedy by Val SemeiksIt's been a while since I've commissioned a Green Arrow piece, but I've been itching for a Green Arrow & Speedy piece for a while now. I wanted a piece that harked back to simpler times. A couple of adventurers out fighting crime, having a fun time. Val Semeiks is a fantastic artist. I enjoyed his art on Lobo, Demon, JLA:Incarnations and other books. He was someone I've always wanted to commission but never did. Earlier this year I decided to contact him about a commission. Best decision I ever made. I've received four commissions this year from him. This one is the latest. I asked for Green Arrow & Speedy in their classic Silver age costumes and he delivered exactly the piece I wanted. A fun piece! Val is easy to work with and a true professional when it comes to commissions. He doesn't mess around. Once he's ready to start a commission, it takes two weeks tops. He keeps you involved in every step. He starts by emailing a thumbnail of the commission. Once he gets the okay, he emails a rough layout sketch and a composite layout of what it will look like on a 11x17 board. He will then email you the finished pencils and then the finished inks. The best, easiest, fastest and smoothest commission experience I've ever had. No joke. The price is great too. If you're thinking about getting a commission, he's the guy. I will post my other Val Semeiks commissions this week. Pen and ink on 11X17 board. Social/Sharing |

It's at the perspective and composition stage that this one comes together because with pros like Semeiks, one can be sure the linework, spot inks, and finishes will come out clean.

I was introduced to Semeiks when he took over on Conan and was doing something of a Barry Windsor-Smith riff. I then enjoyed his work on Demon, though I never read the book. I was told earlier this year that it was worth a read, but as neither publisher wants to invest in keeping all their back catalogue in print, it may be some time before I get to it.
This is some good, Golden Age fun. I love that he set the scene on top of a building, with more buildings in the background. The camera's up shot pov also makes for a far more dynamic composition. Nice, dude!

You hear so many negative stories about commissions, it's refreshing to hear when an artist has such a professional work ethic. Beautiful commission!

Such a clean, classic look. Can we get some actual new comic books that look like this?
