Description

After nearly 4 years, I've finally learned what this lovely painting was used for! This appeared as the illustration for the story "The Indiscreet Mrs. Jarvis," by Anne Homer Warner, in the Saturday Evening Post, April 10, 1954. And who finally gave me the answer? Al Buell's grandson! Really, I owe it all to Rian Hughes who put me in touch with him in the first place! (And in the process, I've discovered the incredible talent of Mr. Hughes as well!)

One of the additional images below is of a scan from a UK woman's magazine. Interestingly, it seems to feature some bizarre overpainting. Woman's Own often reuses illustrations from the Saturday Evening Post, so I think it is highly likely that the alternative published edition comes from an issue of that title. The other additional image is from the cover of a Turkish translation of Patrick Quentin's "The Man With Two Wives" which was serialized in several issues of Woman's Own in 1955.

According to the philsp website, Al Buell published in only three Saturday Evening Post issues (in 1951, 1952 and 1960). If that is true, that should be easy. Website http://www.philsp.com/homeville/fmi/c42.htm#A1616

Hi, Yoann - Thanks so much for researching that for me! Unfortunately, the philsp website is very incomplete so it has not been that easy. As an academic, I do have access to a very good library, and in what little spare time I have, I've browsed through old issues of SEP from Buell's era. I don't claim that the following is a complete list, but these issues have story illustrations by Mr. Buell, but not this one, obviously: September 16, 1950 January 20, 1951 July 14, 1951 November 24, 1951 May 3, 1952 August 2, 1952 December 6, 1952 May 1, 1954 December 11, 1954 February 26, 1955 June 18, 1955 June 25, 1955 July 2, 1955 July 9, 1955 July 16, 1955 March 10, 1956 January 10, 1959 April 23, 1960 May 6, 1961 July 1, 1983

My name is Jon Buell and I am Al Buell's grandson. I am working on a coffee table book of my grandfathers story illustrations which will include a collectors list of all of his story illustrations. He painted over 40 illustrations for Saturday Evening Post, as well as paintings for Cosmopolitan, Redbook, McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, etc,. He was a very prolific painter and it is a joy for his family to see others share in the delight of his art that we have treasured all these years. Help me spread the word about the book, and please contact me if you have any questions or have any information on the history of his work. We have a few missing pieces of information that we are trying to fill in, so if you are a collector, we would love to hear from you. Jon Buell jon@buelldesign.com
