Description(2015, Brush and Ink on Strathmore, 17.5”x23” Image size)Argonauts vs the Monster God! They say there is a mysterious and dangerous island, shrouded in mist and treacherous seas, off the west of Sumatra. Full of mythical, prehistoric, and fantastic creatures it is said that there is one King above all others… The Juggernaut of Pushkara, to some he is known as Kong, and others The Monster God! This commission depicts, loosely in the theme of a mid 20th century foyer poster for a movie that never was, a lost voyage of the Argo in the Southern Seas searching for legendary treasures. Desperate to find land they anchor at an island that seemingly rose from no where, ignorant of the inhospitable horrors that await, that spring forth from the tropical darkness. Reminiscent of Hal Fosters “The Push” Valiant Sunday, with bodies falling against the onslaught, Mark pushed the limits for the complexity and layering of his work, and has some of the most ink laid down in any of his art to date. It’s a whopper of a piece (one of the largest in my collection), featuring a potential standoff between Heracles, and winged helmet Perseus, Mark conducted historical research for inspiration into making sure all the Argonauts were unique. All the explorers reeling in shock and a call to the fray for the Argonauts. We decided to go for the text actuated inked and interwoven into the image, where Mark could show off his filigree skills in the title. The pieces is featured in Carbon 2, where readers can appreciate the evolution of the piece from concept through to finished inks. This commission melds two great loves into one spectacular universe woven by a master. Couldn’t be happier with the result. Social/Sharing |
