DescriptionA great Mystic cover by Brandon Peterson & John Dell I rescued off ebay last year from the Crossgen flood of original art.I still have a fondness for many Crossgen titles and the entire line. Truly great stuff from many different genres than our usual super heroes. Among them, Mystic was shining thanks to incredible art by Brando who clearly upped his game on the title (as many of his Crossgen peers did, all probably benefiting from the studio environment). The writing was fun and ok but not as engaging for me as other titles. But the art! It was sufficient to support my interest which vanned as soon as Brando dropped out. Now for those of you wondering. Comic Box was a long running (2 volumes) French magazine devoted to US comics. Think Wizard with less money, influence and an overall (much?) greater quality in terms of content (the interviews were excellent and worth the price of admission alone). I read it religiously and still own every issues published (again for the interviews). Often, as many magazines or zines do, they would commission (or be offered) a cover from one of the interviewees. This time Brandon. Published in November 2000. I think the piece offers all you would want from a Mystic piece and from the Brandon Peterson of that era. The iconic pose with the determined stare. The magical elements (the scepter and the sword). Her critter (the talking comic relief basically). The Crossgen sigils placed in a somewhat Yin and Yang way. And the many Art Nouveau elements Brandon was incorporating in his art at the time (the overall layout and composition of the piece, the many folds and ribbons of her cape, the color which add to that aspect as well). I also like the verticality of piece which gives it a classical feeling. Let’s not forget the great matching inks of John Dell which are perfect for Brando’s pencils. Quite pleased with this one. I had to fight for it but it was one of my personal top choices among the 100+ lots in the auction. This is part 1 of my 2019 CAF B-Day celebration. Please come often to see the new daily upload. A lovely piece! I still have a great fondness for the Crossgen books and Brandon did some incredible work with Mystic. The hair alone gives my hand cramps. And Comi Box, they sure churned out some great covers back in the day. Congrats on a great piece, if you ever tire of it let me know!
