Description

Opening title splash from the short story "Apple Read" from the Wildstorm Summer Special, featuring my favorite Wildcat, Zealot. Written by Brian Azzarello, with art by Brian Stelfreeze and Karl Story, the story is told nearly entirely wordlessly.

I first saw this piece around a decade ago in Brian's portfolio at Heroes Con. Unlike the other pages from the story, which were inked by Story, this page was done completely by Stelfreeze, and I loved his loose but assured calligraphic brushwork on the page. When I asked Brian about purchasing it at the time, he told me it wasn't for sale, so I asked him to keep me in mind if he ever did decide to sell it. Each year thereafter, whenever I saw him at Heroes, I would inquire about the page, and each year the answer would be the same.

Fast forward to 2024, when for the first time in nearly 20 years, I missed Heroes Con due to my daughter's college graduation. However, I was able to attend Baltimore Comic Con later that year where Brian happened to be a guest. When he saw me at his table, he said to me, "Dude! I was looking for you in Charlotte. I think I'm ready to let go of that page." Unfortunately, he hadn't brought the piece with him to Baltimore, so we agreed to meet up at Heroes this year, where we were finally able to work things out. It seems persistence pays off from time to time, and I'm happy to be able to give the page a new home.

It's a great expressive brush style that is used in Japanese art and caligraphy.
