DescriptionGaar Williams' best known feature is Among the Folks in History, in which Williams would take a look back at society from a different time period, usually 30 or 40 years earlier. In this panel, dated March 4, 1923, a group of men outside a tobacco shop are taking turns looking looking at a picture in a pocket knife. These were usually images considered risque for the day. One of the men asks if the image is of Pauline Hall, who was a well known singer and stage actress of the day, known more for her alluring figure than her singing and acting talents.Gaar Williams' work from the early to mid 1920s is considered his strongest. His pen work was wonderfully expressive and lively, with great variation and movement. During this period, Williams made everything look easy. This panel is signed by Gasoline Alley creator Frank O. King on the back. I'm not sure why, but can only assume that King either claimed it at the syndicate, or Williams gave it to him. Social/Sharing |

I think this is terrific. I like the art, the theme, everything. Where do you find this stuff?

Great piece! And so dated by such a topic! Very very fun piece of history...

Very clever and fun illustration. Any chance of posting the back of the illustration with the signature? Such an interesting story of prominance and ownership. Thanks for sharing.

If I have a chance this weekend, I'll try and scan the back.
