Description

This one has a bit of a write up in regards to colour choices and technique. If that interests you, read on. If not, tadaaaa, Dr. Manhattan.

First off the scan is off because yellow is a freaking pain to scan. With this piece I wanted to do something slightly different. Given that Doc Manhattan is this really intense blue it was pretty clear pretty early on that I would do the background in an orange / yellow scheme. I wanted this to read really graphic. Now I have this thing where I love to add very intense and wonky colours into the reflected light. I use a lot of magenta and aqua and pink for that, even with characters where you don't expect it. I tried not to do this with this piece. I also normally try to pull some of the foreground colour into the background and vice versa. It's something I learnt and it just makes sense to unify the painting.

Why am I telling you this? Because this is one of those pieces where I felt I needed to break the rules. There's no blue in the background. There's not even violet (which I usually use in shadows, even just a little), in fact the darkest colour is a red (carmine to be specific). I did pull the oranges and yellows into the figure because I wanted the background to affect him, not just storywise but from a painting side. I did however avoid pulling extra colours into his skin. There's no aqua, it's all basically just 3 blues and violet with a touch of white. It was a challenge to get the vibrancy into the piece that I usually get by just hitting the shadows with a red or pink or some other unexpected colour. But I wanted this to be about design. I wanted this piece to be about complimentary colours, about a blue vs orange. I wanted Dr. Manhattan to glow and even though the background is busy, I wanted him to dominate.

Long story short, I tried something different. I like the way it turned out. Plus, Dr. Mantattan is just cool

Interesting insight about the yellows. Must be why Nowlan has issues with that color. As far as the pants versus no pants issue, I for one am glad you covered up his naughty blue bits. I know some purists may disagree, but I don't think I really need to see his glowing blue you-know-what. LOL

think the issue is that the scanners use really intense light and if you are using a lighter yellow it just gets completely overpowered and washed out. My scanner isn't the top of the range 3 grand type so you actually end up losing quite a bit of information. I am still trying to configure it all properly but yellow is a pain to scan if you are staying in the lighter values
