Description

This cartoon features Canadian PM John G. Diefenbaker whose caricatures (googly eyed, curly haired and buck toothed) made Macpherson famous and earned him the enmity of "Dief the Chief". The writer looks like Pierre Berton (who worked
with Macpherson at the Toronto Star from 1958-1962).

I believe this cartoon appeared in the Star ca. 1962.

Pick up any of Macpherson's old collections (esp. 60s to mid 70s) and you will be amazed at the freshness and depth of his humor and his artistic mastery. Macpherson's cartoons where exhibited in museums during his lifetime. A traveling exhibit of masterpieces from the national archives was reprinted in the book "Daily Smile" which includes a biography of Macpherson.

Though he had a very different style, the same can be said of his west-coast contemporary and the other great editorial cartoonist of the last century, Len Norris, who focused more on local political and social issues and less on political caricature.
