Description

Artwork by Graham Coton for a Look and Learn story covering the capture by the Americans of the U-505. This happened on june 4th 1944, when a American task force under the command of Captain Daniel Gallery made contact with the U-boat. The USS Chatelain was the closest and immediately attacked with depth charges, as the damaged u-boat surfaced the destroyer continued the attack along with Grumman F4 Wildcats from the USS Guadalcanal the aircraft carrier with the task force, the crew abandoned ship. The damaged and sinking U-boat was boarded and saved by men from the USS Pilbury and towed to Bermuda. At the time the capture was kept secret because of all the vital secret codes etc found on the boat. the three pannels show the surface atack and the U-boat being towed back.
