Description

Stan Lynde wrote and drew the Rick O'Shay strip from 1958 through 1977 when he left over ownership issues with the syndicate.

The strip had two phases - a contemporary setting with cartoonish people (1958 to 1969 +/-) and a second phase where it was set in 1869 and the characters and stories were more realistic.

Though I enjoyed both a lot, the second phase was the one I most remember.

Most of the Rick O'shay material has been reprinted over the years by Stan's Cottonwood publishing, Comics Review, and the The Menomonee Falls Gazette.

Sadly, most of the original art for both phases of the strip was lost in a fire in Stan's studio.

This piece is from the first phase and I found it rummaging through the remains of a large art collection. There were lots of interesting pieces in the pile, but this is the one I wanted. Let me explain why:

It's the original style so it fills a hole

The punch line can be read two ways:

As Bob saying he's not the problem and the other guy is

As Bob / Stan making a general comment on people's inability to admit fault and using Bob as an example

Both interpretations make me smile and it's a really good example of Stan's writing on the strip. There's generally more to than you might think at first glance.

I really love Lynde's early work. He had a great handle on the cartoony approach. Great figure work too. Congrats Alex!
