It's a small Model Sheet. Al Rio used this for referring to the faces and hair styles of the different characters while working on the series. Neat!

A slightly modified version of this was used in issue one of "New Mutants Forever", Cannonball was moved over to the left a little and Cypher was added in just in front of him and behind Wolfsbane. Sunspot is also very off-model from any other version of him, which was not the case in all his other appearances in the title.
