Descriptionunsure if this was ever published, although it has enough "math" all over it, it must've been made for publication. opper is probably best known for his strip "happy hooligan", although he did tons of illustrations for puck, new york journal, chicago and los angeles examiners (newspapers of course), as well as book illustrations - all between the late 1800's and mid 1930's. he retired in 1934 due to failing eyesight. i'm guessing this was an illustration for a book - but when i say i'm guessing i'm guessing! nonetheless, i love the image, created in may of 1890, and very much looking like a precursor to dr. seuss's early work. great stuff. Oh man! That is some elegant line work. Opper's range in drafting abilities is incredible.....from this to happy hooligan, nice!
